The Horizon Europe Staff Exchanges project "Post-irradiation multiscale dynamics of materials" (PRISMA) started in May 2026. The PRISMA project continues a successful series of previous Staff Exchanges projects coordinated by the MBN Research Center, following on from the recent Horizon 2020 RISE projects RADON and N-LIGHT.
PRISMA represents a state-of-the-art innovative research programme that aims to significantly advance our understanding of irradiation-driven multiscale dynamics in materials. This will be achieved by combining multiscale modelling with thorough validation using advanced experimental techniques, and by linking this new knowledge to technological advancements. The project will focus specifically on three interconnected case studies relevant to technological applications, including electron microscopy, material functionalisation, radioresistance, controlled nanofabrication, and novel crystal-based gamma-ray light sources. A key innovative element of the project is the study of the effects of nonlinear post-irradiation medium dynamics and radiation-induced large-scale phenomena in technology-relevant materials.
The first staff exchange visits within the PRISMA project took place in June-July 2026. Dr. Daurzhan Kenbaev and Mr. Askhat Kakimov from the Institute of Physical and Technical Sciences of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU) completed a 2-month stay at the MBN Research Center. The aim of the visit was to develop joint research activities with the MBN Research Center, exchange expertise, gain practical experience in modern computational modelling methods, and discuss future areas of cooperation within the framework of the PRISMA project.
Particular attention was paid to the application of computational modelling methods to current challenges in materials science and radiation physics. Professor Andrey Solov'yov and Dr. Alexey Verkhovtsev from the MBN Research Center provided scientific consultations on using the MBN Explorer and MBN Studio software packages developed by the MBN Research Center and discussed further directions for joint research with representatives of ENU.
Further information about the completed visit can be found in the ENU press release.
